P/F Time: Full Time
Sport: N/A
Location: Claremont, California
Type: Administrative/Staff
Complete Job Description:

Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens is the Division III National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) joint athletics program for Pomona College and Pitzer College, two of the Claremont Colleges, located about 35 miles east of Los Angeles in Claremont, California. Sagehen Athletics is a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), which was formed in 1915, when five Southern California institutions combined for the purpose of promoting and governing competition in intercollegiate sports with the fundamental principle of the conference being to encourage the highest ideals of amateur sports in an environment of high academic standards. In 1970, Pitzer Colleges athletics program joined Pomona Colleges program on an interim basis that in 1972 became permanent. The Pomona-Pitzer athletic tradition continues to this day. While Pomona College will be the employer of record, the chair of physical education and director of athletics will represent both institutions in equal measure. The athletics program supports 21 varsity teams, a physical education program, and an array of wellness, competitive, and recreational club sports.

Pomona College

Established in 1887, Pomona College is one of the leading liberal arts colleges in the nation, offering a comprehensive curriculum, with 48 majors in the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. With a student population of just over 1600, Pomona College is a close-knit and diverse community of accomplished scholars, scientists, entrepreneurs, artists, and athletes, who are passionate about making a difference in the world.

Pitzer College

Founded in 1963, Pitzer College is a top-ranked liberal arts and sciences college. With approximately 1,000 students, the College emphasizes environmental and interdisciplinary studies, the arts, humanities and social, behavioral and natural sciences. Pitzer students shape their own college experience. Focused educational objectives guide undergraduates as they plan their academic careers. Students are encouraged to collaborate with community members on local projects and critically examine the effects of social and environmental policies.

Both Pomona and Pitzer are members of The Claremont Colleges, a unique consortium of seven colleges and graduate schools. They offer both the advantages of small liberal arts colleges and the resources of a large university. As Division III institutions, intercollegiate athletics represent an important educational component within the wide range of learning experiences provided by the Colleges.

Reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Pomona College, the Chair of Physical Education and Director of Athletics (Chair & Director) provides vision, strategic direction, and administrative leadership to the department including: varsity athletics, physical education curriculum, intramural programs, recreation and club sports, faculty and staff wellness programs, athletics facilities management, athletic training, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, sports information, and athletic administration. The successful candidate will understand and appreciate Pomona Colleges unique faculty-coach model and Pomona Colleges tradition of faculty governance and college service, including the Physical Education Departments role in the general education curriculum of the college.

The next leader of Sagehen Athletics will be one who can communicate, inspire, lead, and bring together a strong and diverse community of two great colleges in athletic and recreation programs that will make the diverse community richer, healthier, and one which embraces the highest ideals of amateur sports. The Chair & Director works institutionally to develop and build a culture of wellness and wellness-related activities for all students, faculty, and staff. They will also be one who thinks broadly about questions related to who belongs in athletic environments and about how physical education and athletics can be hubs for discourse about diversity, inclusion, and understanding of difference.

The new Chair & Director will be responsible for continuing to enhance the competitiveness of a Division III intercollegiate athletics program found within strong academically rigorous liberal arts-centered learning environments. The Chair & Director will work collaboratively with coaches and the office of admissions on the recruitment of scholar athletes; will continue to focus on developing relationships with alumni, particularly in support of the athletics program; will encourage and promote an inclusive community among all students, departmental faculty, and staff; and will continue to advance and support the recreational, intramural, and club sport programs. The new Chair & Director will demonstrate an understanding of the components of wellbeing and the ability to leverage recreational activities and the physical education curriculum in the collaboration, development, and implementation of campus-wide wellness strategies. As a strong institutional partner, the Chair & Director provides leadership to staff and coaches and works collaboratively and productively with a wide range of constituents at both Pomona College and Pitzer College including: admissions, advancement, communications, student affairs, alumni and parent relations, registrars, conference and event planning, student health and counseling services, facilities and campus services, deans and presidents of the colleges, SCIAC, and NCAA.

The Chair & Director leads and manages an organization with an annual budget of approximately $2.5 million, 21 varsity sports, over 500 scholar athletes, 25 competitive and recreational club sports engaging 550 students, 100 full- and part-time positions throughout the department, and about 150 student employees. Representing both Pomona and Pitzer Colleges and the interests of student-athletes, coaches, and staff in service to and as a model of best practices within the NCAA and the SCIAC Conference is also an important responsibility of the Chair & Director.

Qualifications

A masters degree is required; significant, progressive professional experience leading a complex, dynamic, and diverse department within a highly selective liberal arts institution is preferred. The successful candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of intercollegiate athletics administration, student-athlete development, NCAA compliance within a Division III environment, and the role of fundraising in supporting strategic and operating objectives. The next Chair & Director should have the capacity and desire to teach physical education activity courses or academic seminars and the ability to inspire the professional development of coaching faculty and athletics administrators. A collaborative management approach, coupled with superior communication and relationship-building skills; a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness; strong planning and fiscal competencies; a familiarity with program development and assessment; and excellent problem-solving abilities will be important considerations in the selection of the next the chair of physical education and director of athletics.
